Dental Tourism

Dental tourism is the practice of traveling to another country (e.g. Hungary) in order to receive dental work.  Depending on the location and treatment, travelling abroad can save you up to 70% of what you would pay at your home country. Including air fare, travel insurance, booking hotels, shopping, car hiring, it can still be cheaper than internal dental care.

Dental care abroad

Last year, over a million people travelled abroad to receive dental procedure and this saved them thousands. Above this they acquired top quality, same as they would have in their own country. People choose this way of care even for the simplest treatment to the longest interventions. And the reasons for it are very plain; firstly they can save money on dental care, secondly they can go on vacation to an exotic, historical country, where they would not go otherwise.

Advantages of dental vacation

Many would think that an important dental work would be so expensive in their country, that they do not give a chance to look around and find cheaper places. But thanks to more affordable traveling prices, Internet technology and important advances in medical science, dental tourism are becoming a global trend. In many cases, it is cheaper to book a flight, a hotel and pay for the dental work in a foreign country, than it would be inland.

People don’t realize that in an eastern university, doctor education can be as qualified as in western countries. Universities like Semmelweis University of Budapest or University of Szeged are carrying authority worldwide. Those doctors, who are finishing these schools, are much in demand. And it is becoming obvious that western hospitals hire doctors from Central Eastern Europe, because of their professionalism.

Disadvantages of dental care abroad

There are off course wrongs of dental tourism. First of all, you are going to a completely alien place, where you don’t speak the language, you don’t know anything about the customs, the laws, taxes etc. And there, you would receive a dental treatment, what is fairly unpleasant most of the times. There are many ways to solve this problem. Before leaving read tips from guide books, from the Internet, and you can even ask your dentist, what he or she recommends. It is sure that they would be happy to help you, as you are their patient, and they want you to be satisfied. When travelling for dental care, always take a family member or a close friend with you, as after a day’s procedure when you are tired and your mouth is numb it is good to have somebody on your side.

Check out before travel

For many procedures, it is customary to check in with your dentist from time to time as you recuperate. However, by receiving treatment abroad, it becomes prohibitively expensive to consult with dentist provided you with primary care. But in these days, there are many clinics, which have opened or rented clinics in the capitals of western countries (like London or Dublin) to consult with foreign patients in their hometown.

When you shop around dental clinics in your neighborhood, you can easily visit them in person, check out the facilities, and meet with clinical staff. But with dental tourism, this type of in-person reconnaissance becomes a little harder to manage. To choose the best option for you, visit their website, read all the reviews, and see their pictures. This can give you a greater sight of how they work, and how the patients were pleased. Above all, you can always give them a call, or ask them to call you, and after spoken with one of the staff you can surely make a decision.

Facts of the most popular destinations

Hungary is in the forefront of dental tourism thanks to the country’s low prices, the qualified doctors, and that Hungarian specialists have been treating visitors from Germany and Austria for decades. Now a full member of the European Union Hungary with its respected tradition of dental care is expanding its dental tourism offerings.

Poland’s joining to the European Union has been a boom for the country’s dental tourism industry. It has become one of the people’s favorite destinations, who are looking for dental treatment. Polish clinics often offer the treatment with recovering in a first class spa.

The Mexican border to the USA is one of the world’s first and busiest dental tourism destinations. Most of the doctors have completed training in the USA, and as this is the nearest place to the country, there are hundreds of thousands visiting Mexico for dental treatment every year.

Conclusion

Dental care costs are constantly on the rise in many Western countries. In the US alone, it is already a multi-billion dollar industry that shows no sign of stopping. But why pay exorbitant prices at home when you can travel abroad and receive the same treatment - if not better - from a fully certified medical facility for a fraction of the price? Until countries like the USA, Ireland, and United Kingdom implement aggressive strategies to lower prices and reduce waiting times, it is likely that the global dental tourism industry will continue to flourish.
